5 WAYS TO CURE ACID REFLUX
Acid Reflux is a very common problem in our world. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) happens when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe. This backwash (acid reflux) can irritate the gentle lining of your food pipe.
Common signs and symptoms of GERD include:
- A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), usually after eating, which might be worse at night
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
- Sensation of a lump in your throat
If you have nighttime acid reflux, you might also experience:
- Chronic cough
- New or worsening asthma
- Disrupted sleep
But why does it happen?
There are many reasons behind this growing problem and each problem can be corrected by you without the help of any doctors.
Not Eating on time
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), our bodies have a natural biological clock and there is proper time assigned for eating, drinking, sleeping and exercising. According to this clock, the best time to eat
- Breakfast : between 7-9a.m. (best before 8a.m.)
- Lunch: between 11a.m.-1p.m. (best before 12 noon)
- Dinner : there is no specific time given for dinner but best is to have a gap of 4 hours between sleep and dinner, so having before 7p.m. is ideal if you sleep at 11p.m. In some Indian cultures, eating before sundown is important so they finish their dinner by 5:30pm and have warm cow’s milk 1-2 hours before sleeping.
Not Sleeping on time
Referring to the same TCM Bio-clock, you will see that major detox organs – gall bladder and liver work from 11p.m. -3a.m.. If you are not in deep sleep during this time then body will not be able to do the necessary detox process and your body will be a pile of garbage! Storing extra acid in your stomach, uric acid in your joints and dirty waste material in your blood (precursor to arterial blockage). Of course, where ever this dirty heavy blood will go it will pollute that organ also. Over time your organs will become slow and inefficient. So, sleep by 9:30p.m. so that by 11 p.m. you are in deep sleep. Initially you won’t be able to sleep at 9:30p.m. but you can start to sleep half an hour early each week and eventually you will reach at the ideal time but you must also make sure to shift the dinner time earlier as well to maintain a gap of minimum 2 hours.
Not Chewing food properly
Now-a-days we gulp our foods like snakes! But our digestive system is not like a snake’s. 70% of digestion happens in our mouth by salivary enzymes in the mouth. Breaking down of the food to almost a liquid form helps the stomach do its job efficiently. As you chew the food, you will notice that the taste of the food changes from sweet to bitter to sweet to salty etc because the saliva is digesting and releasing different chemicals out of the food here. When we chew food to a liquid form, direct absorption of certain nutrients to blood happens from under your tongue and it instantly gives you energy. Not Drinking Water properly
Yes, there is a proper way to drink water and we are all doing it wrong. This is the biggest mistake we all do. 70% of body is water. Imagine messing up with 70% of yourself! Water is the basis of our lives, our physical existence and we mistreat this element the most. Follow these guidelines with respect to this sacred element:
Drink 1.25L of water empty stomach as soon as you get up :
Initially you wont be able to do 1.25L which is 5 glasses of water but you can start with one glass and then next day 1 glass and little more, then 2 glasses and slowly at your own pace reach this level. I still am at 750ML after 2 years of this practice. So, take your time. This will help in elimination of all waste material from your body efficiently. Swirl the water around like you are gargling and drink this water. The morning saliva is a natural detox medicine, so it should go inside your gut to clean the intestines completely. This saliva water acts like soap water for your intestines. It is magical.
Drink water 30 mins before having food and 2 hours after having your meal: This way the digestive liquid comprised of enzymes gets prepared before eating and after eating the digestive fire helps in breaking down the food. If we drink immediately after food then the digestive fire’s intensity decreases and the food is not digested properly.
Not eating and drinking in sitting position
Do not stand while drinking water or eat while standing on road side or in fast food places. The centre of gravity of the body while standing is not at Navel and the food should be eaten when the centre of gravity aligns with the navel else food will cause imbalance in the body and hernia related problems and knee pain can develop as well.
These contribute to an unhealthy stomach and digestive processes do not run smoothly in our body. All of these guidelines can be easily followed with slow and gentle changes.
Treatment for Acid Reflux
Cumin Seed (Jeera) Water
Dry Roast 10 gms of Cumin (Jeera) in a hot pan and drop these Jeera seeds in a glass of normal water. Drink this water for acid reflux for immediate relief. Keep 20 minutes gap between food intake and this treatment.
Carom Seed (Ajwain) Water
Take one glass of water in a pan and bring it to boil. Now, add one- two pinch of Carom seeds to it and let it boil for three to four minutes. You will see the colour of water changing slowly. When the water turns into golden colour, turn off the flame and allow the water to cool down. Drink this water slowly, you can drink this after 20 mins of consuming food and 30 mins before having food.
If possible, get fresh coconut water and drink for immediate relief. You can also drink coconut water at 11am in the morning for 21 days for long term benefits.
Cold Cow’s Milk
This has worked like magic for me personally during times of great distress. For immediate relief take milk from fridge and wait for 10 mins and then drink the milk, if its not cow’s milk then dilute it with water in equal proportion. And for long term benefits, you can drink this milk empty stomach every day (this is after you have completed drinking 1.25Ltrs of water and passed motion after this, you can keep half an hour gap with this).
Complete and total acceptance of the situation you are in. This is the best way to solve chronic acid reflux problem as it is the core emotional reason of this problem. Not being able to accept a situation is very similar to not being able to digest something, so the body creates a response very similar to eating something which is indigestible or causes harm to the body, .
